US special forces command bought access to its app-based location tracking tool
2020-11-16Procurement records obtained by Motherboard showed US Special Operations Command bought additional licences for Locate X, Babel Street's product built on smartphone location data, for about $90,600. A former employee said users could draw a shape on a map, see every device in it and follow one device elsewhere. A command spokesperson confirmed the purchase and said it supported "Special Operations Forces mission requirements overseas". Babel Street did not respond. Many of the apps in this supply chain served Muslim users.
