The FTC announced on 9 July 2026 that RentGrow, a Massachusetts tenant screening company that sells reports to landlords, will pay a 2.25 million dollar civil penalty. The FTC alleged its reports carried duplicate entries for the same criminal case or eviction, which could make an applicant look worse than their record, and that it knew of the problem. It also alleged RentGrow did not tell people all its data sources, marked some disputes invalid without acting, and told people landlords had been sent updates when the notice to landlords said nothing had changed. The order needs a judge's approval.
