On 14 December 2016 Yahoo disclosed that data tied to more than one billion user accounts had been stolen in August 2013. The data could include names, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, MD5-hashed passwords and security questions and answers. Yahoo said this was likely distinct from a 2014 theft of about 500 million accounts it had disclosed on 22 September 2016. In October 2017 Yahoo said all of its roughly 3 billion accounts were affected by the 2013 theft. In 2018 the SEC fined Yahoo's successor Altaba 35 million dollars for failing to disclose the 2014 breach for about two years.
